What is Moderate Science?

Moderate Science is a one-man (i.e., me: Dave Kovacek) operation providing studio recording, on-location recording, editing, and mixing geared toward the low-budget musician community in and around Detroit, MI.  I do all my own work, from the audio work down to clerical duties.  This keeps overhead low, and preserves the spirit of DIY recording.

Are you a studio?

Yes.

Recording in-house provides the best possible experience for my clients.  I'm also able to offer mobile recording to clients if they are more comfortable working out of their own space.  While I'm capable of providing engineering services within rented commercial facilities, I've generally found this to be prohibitively expensive to my target clientele.  The goal is to provide a great sound with a professional attitude, even under unorthodox conditions.  Feel free to email me to discuss your needs and to see if I can help you get a great-sounding recording.

Are you a producer?

Maybe.

If you're looking for a "beat maker" or something similar, you probably want somebody else.  I'm not especially well-versed in the creation of beats for hip-hop or electronic music.  However, if you've got a beat in your head and you need help on the technical side of recording it, I can definitely help you with that.

If you're looking for somebody to take charge of your session or to make sure your recording has a certain "sound", that's more up my alley, though in most past projects my role has been engineer.  If you want to further discuss the role of producer (and whether I'm a good candidate for your project), please email me.

When are you available?

Sessions are normally available on weekends and select evenings.  I book clients on a first-come, first-served basis.  It is suggested to schedule at least 3 weeks in advance of your desired session date.

Can you make me sound "radio ready"?

The short answer is "yes."

The best answer is that you should check out my Demo Reel, or see what I've done for previous clients and decide for yourself.

What do you charge?  I'm broke, will you record me for free?

Do you use Pro Tools?

Pro Tools 12 is available upon request.

Make sure I know you want to use Pro Tools prior to the start of any session together, as I normally use another DAW.

If I record with you, can I take the audio elsewhere for other recording/mixing/etc.?

Yes.  All audio and session data (including digital files or analog media) will be provided to the client upon receipt of payment in full due for recording.

Please note:  my handwritten session notes are not included in this exchange:  a copy of my notes may be made upon request.
